Living in Epping, Essex: Best things to do

Local area   |   23 August 2024

Busy local market stool on a high street

With a population of little over ten-thousand people, the market town of Epping is one of the most desirable places to live in Essex.

Located just outside of London, this charming town enjoys  beautiful countryside while boasting close connections to the city. This is achieved through excellent travel options, including Epping Station in the heart of the town, as well as the M25 and M11, which can both be accessed within minutes.

So, whether you’re looking to move to the town or just fancy a visit, this Epping area guide is here to give you the full run-down.

Some of the best things to do in Epping

Explore Epping Forest

Spanning over 6,000 acres, Epping Forest is a must visit if you’re in Epping. Perfect for nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, dog walkers, and anyone who loves being outside, the space is the perfect escape from the urban buzz.

The forest is home to miles of trails, a variety of local wildlife, and Copped Hall, a stunning 18th-century mansion with gardens and a lake, perfect for a sunny afternoon out. So, if you’re looking for something to do on a hot summer’s day, or if you fancy an early morning dog walk, Epping Forest is the place to go!

Visit the High Street

Running down the centre of Epping is the High Street, home to a selection of shops, restaurants, cafes and services. With household names like Marks and Spencer and Boots sat along side small local business, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping.

As well as the shops on the High Street, every Monday, including bank holidays, there is the local market. A market has been running in Epping since 1253, making this tradition over 750 years old. With 84 stalls, various local businesses take to the High Street to sell a range of items, from food and drink to plants and gardening supplies.

Epping Golf Club

Epping boasts a fantastic 18-hole parkland course, perfect for golfers of all skill levels. The course is known for its undulating terrain, water features, and stunning views of the Essex countryside. There’s even a driving range and practice facilities to perfect your skills.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, Epping Golf Course offers a welcoming atmosphere which caters to both pay-and-play and membership options alike, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a round of golf with friends or family.

Transport Links in Epping

By car

Epping Forest is well-connected by road. The M11 motorway borders the eastern edge of the town, providing easy access.

The M25 motorway also runs just below Epping, offering another option for those coming from further afield.

Both these major roads are perfect for commuters, making it easy to get to surrounding towns and cities.

By train

Epping Station is on the Central Line, offering direct services into Central London. This means you can be at Liverpool Street Station in 38 minutes*, ideal for commuters or families looking for a day out in the city.

Epping Ongar Railway is a heritage railway running between Epping and Ongar. While it’s not a typical commuter service, it offers a unique experience, connecting you to various villages in the area.

By bus

On weekdays buses run frequently across the town, allowing you to access all different parts of the area and the wider district. This is ideal if you have a short commute or just want to visit the High Street.

By plane
